Domestic Abuse Awareness Conference

Posted on: March 1, 2022

Friday 18th March 2022
8:45am – 11:30am

Essex Police and the Police Fire & Crime Commissioner are proud to be partnering with Essex Chambers of Commerce to deliver their first virtual Domestic Abuse Awareness Conference in Essex. In 2021, domestic abuse represented 19% of all crimes in Essex – over 30,000 crimes.

Domestic abuse and other forms of violence are most commonly perpetrated by men against women. However, it must also be recognised that controlling and abusive behaviour can also occur in same sex relationships and can be perpetrated by women against men.

Domestic Abuse is so often an unspoken crime and you may think it has little to do with the workplace but did you know that it costs the economy approximately £14 billion per year? This is can be felt directly by employers through lost work days, absence and lower productivity but also indirectly through mental health issues, distracted and frightened workers and low morale across a team. It has a far reaching impact not just on the individual but on a whole workforce.

This conference brings together Essex Police, the PFCC and leading industry experts to raise awareness of Domestic Abuse, the impact it has on the workplace, how the Police combat it, the duty of care employers have and how they can create safe spaces for their workforce.

We often spend more time with our work colleagues than anyone else, making the workplace an important environment in dealing with Domestic Abuse. By embeding a culture of understanding, through training, employers can break the taboo and silence around abuse and create a safe space for their staff. The rise in reported cases of Domestic Abuse throughout the pandemic highlights the vital role workplaces have to play as many workers return.

It’s important to remember that violence is always abuse but abuse isn’t always violence.
